US And China Relations American Foreign relations and Foreign Policy regarding China are very critical and very tumultuous. Information that China has stolen confidential information regarding nuclear weapons has now come to light. This, combined with China's restrictive policies regarding trade with America and its long history of opportunism in dealings with the U.S., has brought our past policies, as well as Clinton's present policy, for dealing with China into question. Can we trust this nation? We currently have protective relationships with nations surrounding China, and America's relationship with Japan has changed from adversarial to friendly. America must also provide Taiwan with adequate military force for their defense. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, America has become China's greatest threat, and, now, they may have technology enough to act against us. China is progressing and growing-we can benefit from a friendly, progressive relationship with it. However, such a friendship may eventually backfire and harm America's self-interest. Does America have a choice as to whether or not it should become more positively involved with China? For the sake of our other foreign policies regarding North Korea, Russia, etc, no America has no choice. China has aided us in the past, and it could be a very valuable friend or a dangerous enemy. Taiwan is a key factor in our policies involving China. China insists that America cease to sell weapons and other military supplies to Taiwan, and it also wishes to claim the island as its own. Taiwan, however, wishes to claim independence as a democratic nation. This conflict can add to America's self-interest. If we negotiate a compromise between the two-possibly allowing them to aid one another economically and militarily, while granting Taiwan autonomy, then America once again may slide into China's good graces. A friendly relationship with China means more security for America. Should a crisis occur in China, military action on the part of the United States should be shunned. China already fears our military force as a result of our "theater missile defense" involving Japan and other nations surrounding China. Although Taiwan is not yet part of this defense system, China has posed threats to the U.S. if Taiwan becomes a part of it. Negotiations with China should provide resulting reciprocal military defense in crisis, an economic upper-hand, and political refinement regarding China's relations with Taiwan. None of these points should be sacrificed in compromise as each one is crucial to America's world status. An especially important note is that if China's economy is aided in an imbalanced manner, then it could overtake America's economic position. Military action in China by the United States should only be taken if America is threatened by China's military. If China plans any missile or nuclear attacks, then there may be no path to a friendly relationship between China and the United States. However, both nations have futures that are somewhat dependent on each other. As a result, a friendly relationship should be a top priority. In conclusion, I hope that America can lay aside cultural differences and focus on military and economic strategies to use and obtain a friendly relationship with China in order to make America an increasingly secure nation.

Women’s social status improved with the up and coming government policies and intolerance of Native Americans became more prominent due to westward expansion. Segregation laws oppress African Americans and violate their rights as American citizens. Women gained suffrage in the gilded age which significantly improved their social status. Previously, women were viewed as inferior to men and incapable of having the same responsibilities. The cause of women’s suffrage was carried by middle class women and was launched in 1848 at Seneca Falls. Many women believed a major cause of poverty for immigration and working-class families was the excessive drinking by male factory workers. Women successfully advocated for total abstinence from alcohol. Many women had leisure time as a housewife, so they got more involved in politics and social issues. Middle class women did most of the shopping for their families so they became the prominent consumers. Women likely had a part time job but they were vulnerable to low-paid and insecure work without benefits. They were also discriminated against when being hired because they were more likely to take leave for childcare or maternity leave. The mobilization of the American economy sprouted from the rise of technology in the gilded age through the development of railroads, homesteads, and farming techniques. This expansion on the Great Plains increased intolerance towards the Native Americans, which soon resulted in removal of most Indian tribes. At first, they attempted a truce through the treaty of Fort Laramie, where the government and representatives of the tribes discussed the terms of westbound settlers. The tribes would receive annuity in return for their cooperation. However, the government failed to compensate the tribes properly and violated the treaty. Trains were pulled by horses prior to the invention of steam locomotives, so the railroads running west became known as â€Å"The Iron Horse† by Native Americans. Many oppressive acts such as the Homestead Act and the Dawes Severalty Act displayed intolerance of the Native Americans. The Battle of the Little Bighorn/ Custer’s Last Stand was a result of Indian intolerance. Another social group that was deeply impacted by the gilded age was the African Americans, who were affected by Jim Crow laws. The old south was unwilling to accept the new technology and there was an emerging grey area between states laws and rights versus the federal government. The southern sharecropping system was economically backing the Jim Crow laws. State black codes restricted the freedom of African Americans, and compelled them to work for lower wages. The purpose of these oppressive laws were to preserve the system of white supremacy. Civil rights acts were introduced with hopes of equality for African Americans but they were ruled unconstitutional. Segregation laws enforced a â€Å"separate but equal† status for African Americans. In conclusion, the gilded age transformed the country and impacted many social groups of American society. Women gained the right to vote and more social status while the Native Americans were oppressed harsher than ever. Jim crow laws restricted African Americans by segregating the country. The technological advances during the gilded age provided a more modern society and influenced changing government policies. These advances also allowed for a boosted economy.

These documents vary in years from 1632-1634, drawing a close to the middle segment of the Thirty Years War. These articles illustrate not only events such as a General’s murder, Swedish defeat or French apprehension, they also show a growing desire for peace and political well-being contrasted with serious religious sentiment. At this stage in history Sweden is now involved with many allying to protect German liberties. The balance of power in Europe, always a delicate manner, was naturally threatened by the war, kingdoms such as France watched closely to protect their own states. It is through the coupling of this time of history with the documents listed here that one ca n see an intricate web of motives, including ones from political success and dominance to religious purity, all under the blanket of a â€Å"religious war†. This leads the audience to ask and judge where Europeans’s opinion and ideas stand considering the war as the unique solution to war loomed ahead. To investigate these different motives three out of the five mentioned documents will be closely analyzed, beginning with document twenty. Entitled â€Å"Memorandum of Hoe von Hoenegg† this article was written in Dresden, Germany by Lutheran Theologian Matthias Hoe von Hoenegg. It is his answer to the Elector of Saxony’s question on the religious consequences of peace.
